As cane farmers get ready for the upcoming sugar harvest, it's been an interesting week for sugar prices.

Short term prices have been dropping, while those further out have had a bit of a rise.

Sugar analyst Tom McNeill from Green Pool Commodities says it comes down to more news from some of the big international players like Brazil, China and Thailand.

"A little bit of the pressure has come off and that may principally be that India, Thailand and countries like China are having a good crop and their crops have firmed up a little in the past couple of weeks," he says.

"CS Brazil is still under something of a cloud and I guess that's keeping this market reasonably nervous and possibly a couple of cents a pound built into the price just on the back of that nervousness."

Meanwhile, the Australian crop looks set to be revised upwards to up to 4.4 million tonnes after a good growing conditions, particularly in Queensland's northern growing districts.Cane farm at Farleigh near Mackay.
