(Bloomberg) -- Above avg rain in south China from Oct-Dec.
had “big effect” in Guangxi, where by Dec. 31, cane crushed
this season fell 17% from yr earlier to 10.3m mt, says Trish
Madsen, analyst with Green Pool Commodity Specialist Pty Ltd.

* Sugar production slid even more, down 22% to 1.08m mt
* Besides slowing harvest, wet weather “resulted in very low
sugar content,” she says by e-mail from Brisbane, Australia
* “The risk from delayed progress is that if the crop gets
hit by frost there is a lot of cane that could be affected”
* Mills rushing to get cane milled to avoid possible frost in
late Jan., she says
* On flip side, rain may boost Guangxi’s cane tonnage; final
output will depend on whether rain offsets sugar yield
decline, possible negative frost effects
* Green pool projects Guangxi sugar output at 5.5m t vs China
Sugar Association’s 6m and last yr’s 6.34m
