Green Pool 2012/13 Sugar Balances Show Third Consecutive Global Surplus

Green Pool Commodity Specialists have forecast a global sugar surplus of 9.497 mln mtrv for 2011/12 in their annual statistics, released today.

The consultancy and analysis firm, based in Brisbane, Australia, raised their forecast by 1.57 mln mt from March 2012 numbers.

World Production & Consumption

Green Pool also predicts a third consecutive global surplus of around 7.07 mln mtrv in 2012/13.

This surplus is due to rising global stocks, high Thai and Chinese production and a swing back to sugar over ethanol production from cane in CS Brazil.

“Despite the CS Brazil crop forecast at under 31 million tonnes of sugar, 2012/13 is one year the market will not be concerned by its reduced contribution,” said Tom McNeill, director of Green Pool.

“Other suppliers in the short term have filled the void left by Brazilian millers who have struggled to renovate their cane crops.
Indian exports seem unlikely to exceed 3.2 - 3.3 mln tonnes in Oct 11 - Sept 12,” he said.

Green Pool’s 2012/13 sugar balance reflects the company’s forecast that global sugar will move from some near term tightness to much stronger supply in Q3 2012.

Headline numbers:

2011/12 annual sugar balance
Production: 175.99 mln mtrv
Consumption: 166.49 mln mtrv
Surplus: 9.497 mln mtrv

2012/13 annual sugar balance
Production: 176.63 mln mtrv
Consumption: 169.56 mln mtrv
Surplus: 7.07 mln mtrv

This is the first time Green Pool Commodity Specialists (Green Pool) has distributed any figures for publication.

Figures are calculated on an annual crop year basis with consumption on an April/March basis.

All figures above are on a metric tons raw value (mtrv) basis. Individual numbers mentioned in the commentary though may be mttq (tel quel), but this is noted when that is the case.
