Sugar analyst Tom McNeill says returns for the next year are in the vicinity of $400 a tonne, which he says is reasonable but down on the last couple of seasons.

He says the fall in returns is due to good harvests in the major growing areas around the world.

And it's on track to be grow even more.

"I guess what the market overall has is a fairly bearish view fo the next six to 12 months and that's being driven by the fact that the current year is in surplus.

And now people are looking forward and saying the next Centre-South Brazil crop will be large ... to maybe as high as 585 million tonnes of cane.

But Mr McNeill says further away from early market projections, the predicted price for 2014 is back up around $450.
